2026 World Cup: Appoint a top class coach for Black Stars - Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe tells GFA
· GhanaSoccernetFormer Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has called on the government to act quickly in appointing a high-caliber coach capable of turning around the fortunes of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The appeal comes in the wake of head coach Otto Addo’s dismissal following Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart, a defeat that followed a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria in Vienna and intensified concerns over the team’s readiness.
With the World Cup fast approaching, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe emphasized that the priority must be competence, experience, and immediate impact.
“If the government has the money, they should pay well and go for a top-class coach,” Dr Nyaho Tamakloe told Graphic Sports, underlining the reality that elite expertise comes at a premium.
“Some coaches have the ability to turn teams around quickly," he added.
He also warned against reappointing former Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah, suggesting that past issues should rule out any comeback and that Appiah himself should decline such an offer.
Names such as 2014 World Cup-winning coach Joachim Low and South African tactician Pitso Mosimane have already emerged as potential candidates for the role.
The GFA is expected to finalize the appointment in the coming days as the Black Stars prepare to face Mexico in a friendly in May, followed by a match against Wales. In the World Cup, Ghana will open Group L fixtures against Panama, England, and Croatia.
