Antoine Semenyo relives emotional Ghana World Cup memories with family
· GhanaSoccernetAntoine Semenyo has opened up on the emotional connection his family has with Ghana’s World Cup history as he prepares for the 2026 tournament in North America.
Speaking to FIFA, the Manchester City forward said supporting Ghana during past World Cups became a major family occasion growing up in England.
“My mum and dad are Ghana through and through,” Semenyo said.
“I feel like watching Ghana play in the World Cup was so special. Mum, Dad, uncles, aunties, cousins all turn up to one house, and we’ll watch all the games together, celebrating, screaming, all the emotions and above.”
Semenyo also recalled Ghana’s famous 2010 World Cup run in South Africa, particularly the dramatic quarter-final against Uruguay.
“I remember being at my uncle’s house and we were screaming after the handball, thinking we were going through,” he recalled.
Despite the heartbreak from Asamoah Gyan’s missed penalty, Semenyo said those moments strengthened his admiration for the Black Stars.
The forward, who made his Ghana debut in 2022, said representing the Black Stars was never a difficult decision despite growing up in England.
“Ghana came in when I was 19 or 20, so I was never going to turn it down,” he added.
