Spider-Man: Brand New Day won a fourth weekend in a row at the box office, adding another $39 million to its total. It is now the second-highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office, and worldwide it has made a staggering $2.2 billion. This week, it should pass both Titanic and Ne Zha 2 to become the fourth-highest-grossing film ever released. Worldwide, it has a chance to pass Avatar: The Way of Water to become the third-biggest film ever. Here in the States, it has $100 million to go to pass Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the biggest film in the US.

Spider-Man & Insidious Lead Sony To Victory

Sony rode Spider-Man and the latest film in the Insidious franchise to take the two top spots this weekend. Out of the Further made $25.3 million, the fifth straight film in the franchise to open over $20 million. After that, they drop like rocks, but they are made on the cheap, and audiences are still showing up, so another Insidious is probably coming. The Odyssey fell to third place, as we thought it would, with an impressive $19.5 million. Over the last seven days, it became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all-time. Last week's two wide openers fell to fourth and fifth place, with PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie in fourth and End of Oak Street in fifth.

The weekend box office top five for August 21:

  1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day- $39 million
  2. Insidious: Out of the Further- $25.3 million
  3. The Odyssey- $19.5 million
  4. PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie- $9.1 million
  5. End of Oak Street- $9 million

This weekend is the final of the summer, and what a summer it has been. $4.4 billion was the take this year, 20% more than last year and only 7% behind the mythical summer of 2019 that everyone loves to bring up constantly. Trying to close that gap even further will be five new releases. The biggest and most interesting will be the Looney Tunes film Coyote Vs Acme. Let's see if people actually show up for that one. Also opening are Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars, horror film Buddy, Macon Blair's Idiots, and the latest concert film to enter the marketplace, Ghost: 2 Big To Rig. Spider-Man might be able to just hang on for the top spot, but this should be a big shake-up to the top five this week.
