LANTERNS Subtitles May Have Just Spoiled a Big Hal Jordan Twist

Lanterns may have accidentally given away a pretty huge Hal Jordan secret, and it came from the last place most fans would think to look: the subtitles.

Episode 5, “Lights Out,” left Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan in rough shape following the attack on Rushville. Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart finds his injured mentor buried beneath the rubble, and during their emotional exchange, John finally takes the Green Lantern ring from him.

Pretty major moment. But fans watching with Spanish subtitles caught a strange detail that completely changes how the scene could be interpreted.

The subtitles identify Hal as “Clone de Hal,” which literally translates to “Hal Clone.” If that description is intentional, John may not actually be talking to the real Hal Jordan at all.

One theory making the rounds is that this version of Hal could be a projection created by his Green Lantern ring. We’ve already seen the show establish that this is possible. Earlier, Hal chipped off a piece of the ring and seemingly used it to create a projection of his younger self, sending the duplicate away to conduct reconnaissance.

That projection hasn’t been seen since. So, could Hal have created another version of himself? The Hal John encounters beneath the rubble certainly looks current. He’s older and wearing the same clothes, so this wouldn’t simply be the younger projection returning.

It raises the possibility that Hal somehow created a more recent duplicate before escaping, leaving the projection behind to pass the ring to John and potentially convince everyone that Hal Jordan died.

It also opens up a much bigger question that if the real Hal survived Rushville and intentionally disappeared, what exactly is he planning?

Of course, there’s another explanation that’s considerably less exciting. “Clone de Hal” could simply be a subtitle mistake. Someone handling the Spanish localization may have used an incorrect character label, and fans could be building an elaborate Green Lantern conspiracy around a translation error.

Still, the fact that Lanterns has already introduced Hal projections makes this particular mistake suspicious enough to keep an eye on.

There are only three episodes left, and the recent mid-season trailer is already teasing Sinestro’s return along with more answers surrounding Hal Jordan’s death. Whether “Clone de Hal” was an accidental spoiler or just an unfortunate subtitle choice should become clear soon.
