THE BREADWINNER Trailer Has Nate Bargatze Stepping Into the Chaos of Parenthood With Mandy Moore
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantSony Pictures has released the first trailer for The Breadwinner, giving audiences their first real look at comedian Nate Bargatze making the jump from standup stages to movie stardom. The family comedy is directed by Eric Appel and it looks like a funny, relatable take on modern parenting roles flipped upside down.
Bargatze stars as Nate Wilcox, a former car salesman whose life takes an unexpected turn when his wife Katie, played by Mandy Moore, scores a massive opportunity after appearing on “Shark Tank.”
Katie’s success comes with a big ask. She has to hit the road for an extended business trip, leaving Nate at home to manage their household and raise their three young daughters on his own for the first time.
The official logline reads: “With three young daughters and little experience handling their day-to-day needs, Nate finds out quickly that running the household is the toughest gig he’s ever had.”
The trailer leans hard into that chaos, following Nate as he fumbles through daily life, tangles himself in laundry, burns breakfast, locks his family out of their own house, and somehow gets lost on the way to a simple school drop-off. At one breaking point, he sums it all up with, “She makes it look so easy, but it’s so hard!”
It’s got Mr. Mom type vibes. The footage highlights Bargatze’s low-key comedic style, built around frustration, confusion, and self-awareness rather than over-the-top antics. It’s a smart fit for a story about a guy realizing just how much invisible work goes into keeping a family running.
Bargatze has been performing standup for more than two decades, sold over a million tickets in 2024, and has earned a reputation as “the nicest man in standup.”
As for Moore, she plays a driven, capable mom whose success forces the entire family to adapt, even if that adjustment is messy.
The supporting cast includes Colin Jost, Zach Cherry, Martin Herlihy, Kate Berlant, Kumail Nanjiani, and Will Forte. The Wilcox daughters are played by Birdie Borria, Charlotte Tucker, and Stella Fitzgerald, who look primed to steal scenes as the kids watching their dad scramble to keep up.
Bargatze also helped shape the story, co-writing the script with Dan Lagana, known for Christmas with the Campbells.
The Breadwinner looks like a grounded, funny family comedy that taps into real-life frustrations without trying too hard. It puts Bargatze right in his comfort zone, letting his observational humor shine while exploring what happens when a dad realizes parenting isn’t something you can wing.
, The movie is set to hit theaters on March 13, 2026.
