Portugal: Vieira explains Cristiano Ronaldo’s new role in Jorge Jesus’ team

Former Benfica president, Luis Filipe Vieira has stated that Cristiano Ronaldo may no longer be a guaranteed starter under the new Portugal manager, Jorge Jesus.

Jesus took over the Selecao following Roberto Martinez’s exit after they crashed out from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

During Martinez’s tenure, Ronaldo and his teammates advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, where they were defeated 1-0 by the eventual champions, Spain, with Mikel Merino scoring a last-minute goal.

Having made his sixth and likely final appearance at the quadrennial event, Ronaldo is expected to continue his international career under compatriot, Jorge Jesus, who has previously managed Benfica on two occasions.

“I believe he understands how to handle that situation and will manage it effectively,” Vieira remarked to Antena 1 (via GOAL).

“He shares a strong rapport with Ronaldo, without a doubt. Ronaldo is also aware that the end is approaching. He will need to make decisions, and at times, he may play, while at other times, he may not.

“I know him very well. He is an exceptional professional. I am not the only one who acknowledges this; the players who have worked with him all affirm it. I believe this is the right decision.

“Having a Portuguese coach again is crucial. The last one we had was Fernando Santos, and now we have Jorge, who I believe possesses the capability to deliver a performance that will please us all.”

Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record as the Selecao’s all-time leading scorer, with 146 goals in 233 appearances, including 28 goals scored under Martinez in 37 matches.
