Gunmen believed to be bandits have abducted an unspecified number of students from the Government Day Secondary School in Lassa town, located in the Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The criminals attacked the community on Monday morning while the students were writing the Senior School Certificate Examination, SSCE, organized by the National Examinations Council, NECO.

One teacher was shot dead during the incident and another sustained injuries.

Residents who confirmed the development to journalists alleged that Nigerian military troops stationed in the area had left on a patrol to Uba, a nearby approximately 16 kilometers away, just before the bandits struck.

“The soldiers were not around when the terrorists invaded. They came in large numbers, firing sporadically and causing panic everywhere.

“They took away students writing NECO and their teachers,” one of the residents said.

Spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident and acknowledged that several students are still missing following the raid.
