Iran war: What China will do after Trump’s visit to Beijing – US

United States Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer expressed confidence that China would take measures to restrict material support for Iran during the ongoing conflict.

When asked on Bloomberg TV on Friday whether he believed Chinese President Xi Jinping would exert pressure on Tehran to assist the US in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Greer responded, “First and foremost, it is crucial for China to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open – without tolls or military oversight. This was evident from our discussions, and we appreciate that.

“Regarding China’s engagement with Iran, we believe the Chinese are adopting a pragmatic approach – they do not wish to align themselves against us.

“They are interested in achieving stability in the region, as is President Trump, which gives us considerable confidence that they will act to minimize any material support for Iran.”

The US Trade Representative further noted that while rare earth exports from China to the US are on the rise, Beijing continues to be slow in approving certain shipments.

Jamieson Greer informed Bloomberg TV that China has been hesitant in issuing some export licenses, necessitating intervention from US officials on behalf of the impacted companies.

“I would rate their performance as satisfactory in this regard.

“We have certainly observed an improvement in rare earth exports. Although the process can be sluggish at times, there are occasions when we must assert our position,” he remarked during the interview.
