History will judge you – Utomi tackles judiciary over role in elections

A professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has hit the judiciary over its role in deciding elections in the country.

In a post on his verified X handle on Saturday, Utomi said history will judge the role that the judiciary plays in every election cycle.

According to him, a democracy is only as strong as the institutions that protect the rights of its citizens.

He added that if those entrusted with upholding justice fail to redeem the confidence placed in them, history may remember them as having been part of the forces that contributed to the decline of the Nigerian dream.

“When voter participation is low and large numbers of citizens do not participate in choosing their leaders, we must take seriously what that says about the strength of our democratic mandate.

“That is why I described the present administration as a minority government in terms of its electoral mandate.

“The judiciary also has a critical responsibility at this moment. Courts are not merely places where disputes are settled. They are institutions upon which citizens depend to protect justice, constitutional order and the democratic process.

“History will judge the role the judiciary plays at this moment. This is why every institution must rise to the responsibility of protecting democracy and the Nigerian people,” he tweeted.
