Strait of Hormuz forever ours – Iran declares
by Matthew Atungwu · Daily PostIran has declared ownership of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that it will forever remain in the possession and management of Tehran.
Chairman of the Iranian parliament’s national security commission, Ebrahim Azizi, made this declaration on Tuesday.
Azizi said the Strait was an all-round economic, political and military lever in comments reported by state news agency, ISNA.
Recall that at the start of the war, Iran blockaded the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes.
The US thereafter launched its own naval blockade in response.
Iran’s foreign ministry has insisted steps have been taken to restore the flow of ships in the strait, despite most vessels remaining stuck in the region.
Western countries, led by Britain, have been pushing to reopen the strait, with foreign secretary Yvette Cooper warning the world is sleepwalking into a global food crisis if it remains closed.
