Modern Warfare 4 will conclude the series, new COD sub franchise in the works

The forthcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will wrap up the story, which has technically been running for almost twenty years due to the remakes and remasters.

“I don’t want to give any spoilers, but this is going to be the epic conclusion of this recent series of Modern Warfare,” said Activision Chief Marketing Officer Tyler Bahl in an interview with The Game Business,

“It’s not that some characters and pieces can’t live on beyond this and be reinvented. But we’re excited by closing this chapter and launching a new one,” he added.

It appears that the continual cycle of Black Ops and Modern Warfare has dampened enthusiasm for the games, “It was not something that our community was looking for,” said Bahl.

“They wanted something fresh, and even though there were different time settings and ways to play the game with new features, that tonal shift is something that they were looking for. So, we’ve already stated that a future title is going to be a new sub-franchise and we’ve already laid the groundwork. But we’re really excited about Modern Warfare 4, and that addresses some of that feedback.”

The last Call of Duty that was not a Black Ops or Modern Warfare was Call of Duty: Vanguard, which took the series back to its World War II roots. We loved it, giving it a score of 9/10, but it underperformed commercially.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will launch on 23rd October 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It will not be available on the legacy consoles, PS4 and Xbox One, which are also losing support for Warzone. This time, the game is heading to Korea and features a bearded Captain Price and the tag line “No line holds forever.”

I spent some time in the Modern Warfare 4 beta and had some thoughts, you can read those here.
