Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered pops up with an ESRB rating

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered has been rated by the ESRB, with the revitalised game set to come to both PC and PlayStation 5 according to the listing.

Game ratings like this appear pretty frequently, and could indicate that Sony is in the later stages of the remaster’s development. Could Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered be a launch title for the PS5 Pro? Sony might want something new-ish to help showcase the souped up mid-gen console.

The Horizon Zero Dawn remaster was first reported on in 2022, the initial story from MP1ST and then being backed up by VGC, claiming that an updated version of the 2017 hit would bring the title to the newer iteration of Guerrilla Games’ engine from Horizon Forbidden West, updating it with new character models, lighting, animations, and also refining things like accessibility features and add quality of life improvements to the core gameplay.

However, you might still be wondering what the point of all this is. Horizon Zero Dawn is very much playable on PS5 via backward compatibility to the PS4 version of the game, and since an update in 2021, the game has been updated to allow the PS5 to run at full 2160p and 60FPS. Meanwhile, the game on PC might have launched with performance troubles, but a slew of patches, and the march of time with more powerful CPUs and GPUs meant that the game is in a much, much better state now.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered essentially the same story as we saw with The Last of Us Part II Remastered and, from the launch of the PS5, with Spider-Man Remastered. Both games took still very recent PS4 games and sought to spruce them up for the new consoles. Spider-Man Remastered was able to fold in the new ray-tracing options built for Spider-Man: Miles Morales, while The Last of Us followed on from the more significant The Last of Us Part I remake with some more subtle graphics refinements, support for VRR and better upscaling, and a new roguelike mode.

We scored the game a great 8/10 upon its original 2017 release, enjoying the deep sci-fi tale that Guerrilla told, the precision battling against the robots that now roam the Earth, and soaking in the technical showcase that Guerrilla had cooked up on PS4.
