John Amos' cause of death revealed after Good Times actor's cremation

Legendary actor John Amos, who starred in shows such as Good Times and Roots, died on August 21, with his death certificate confirming his cause of death

John Amos died at the age of 84, it was revealed earlier this week.

The Good Times star's son, KC Amos, confirmed the sad news in a statement, revealing his dad had died on August 21 in Los Angeles. It's now been confirmed by his death certificate that the star died of congestive heart failure. It also said he was cremated nine days after his passing.

According to the death certificate, obtained by TMZ, the legendary actor died at 5:18pm on August 21 at an Inglewood hospital in California. The publication states no other significant medical conditions were noted and he was cremated on August 30.

On Tuesday, son KC shared a statement with the Hollywood Reporter. It read: "It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold … and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life." He added that John's legacy will live on in his "outstanding works in television and film as an actor."

John's exceptional career had spanned decades. His perhaps most notable role came in 1977 miniseries Roots, in which he played older Kunta Kinte. He also starred as James Evans Sr. on the CBS sitcom Good Times, which ran from 1974 to 1976. The hit series focused on couple Florida Evans (played by the late Esther Rolle) and her husband James, and their family. It has been described as a pioneering piece of television thanks to its focus on an African American family.

Elsewhere, he appeared on the big screen in films such as Coming to America (1988), in which he played the character Cleo McDowell - a role he reprised in the sequel Coming 2 America (2021). His other most notable credits included Die Hard 2 (1990) and Uncut Gems (2019).

On the small screen, John also had roles on other hit sitcoms. He held brief appearances on the likes of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Two and a Half Men, My Name Is Earl and 30 Rock. He also featured on the Mary Tyler Moore Show and played Admiral Percy Fitzwallace in the West Wing. His most recent acting credits included taking on the role of Buddy Lissons in an episode of the Righteous Gemstones in 2022.

A number of famous faces paid tribute to John following the news of his death, including Bond and The Goonies star Robert Davi. Taking to Instagram, he wrote: "Another legend has passed - Wonderful person Great actor and Friend JOHN AMOS !! We worked several times together over several decades RIP dear Soul ! Condolences to family Prayers."
