Ex-Liverpool star makes major Mohamed Salah contract claim he won't want to hear
Liverpool have decisions to make on Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, with all three players out of contract at the end of the current season
by Tom Victor · The MirrorFormer Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann believes the club should prioritise new deals for Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold before doing the same for Mohamed Salah.
All three men are out of contract at the end of the season, with the club yet to tie any of them down to an extension. Alexander-Arnold has been linked with Real Madrid, while Salah could yet be the subject of renewed interest from the Saudi Pro League after Liverpool knocked back a bid from Al-Ittihad in 2023.
The Egypt forward has five goals and five assists in 10 outings for the Reds this season. He ended up with one of each on Sunday, scoring from the penalty spot against former club Chelsea and then laying on the winner for Curtis Jones.
Despite this, Hamann is worried about Salah's gifts waning as he gets older. For this reason, he's unsure an extension for the 32-year-old is the way to go.
"At Mohamed Salah's age, his powers can vanish at some point," Hamann told Flashscore. "It's harder to stay fit and at your best as a forward as you get older.
"I think Liverpool should prioritise keeping Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, and take their time on Salah and see if he still scores lots of goals as usual. If it's the right time to part ways, then Salah might take a deal to go to Saudi Arabia, we'll see."
Hamann also suggested Liverpool can win the league this term after their "huge" win over Chelsea. "Manchester City have lost Rodri, he can't be replaced and Arsenal dropped points, I think Liverpool have a great chance to win the Premier League and go far in the Champions League," the German added.

Sunday's victory leaves Liverpool top of the league, but they're entering a tough run of games. After a midweek trip to RB Leipzig in the Champions League, they will face three of the Premier League's top five sides in the form of Arsenal, Brighton and Aston Villa.
"This is in my opinion our biggest test, to play Champions League and Premier League; the hardest games three days in a row," Liverpool manager Arne Slot said after the Chelsea game. "That's what [Manchester] City did last season, that's what Arsenal did - both of these clubs did this for two years in a row now.
"You saw two years ago how difficult that was for us and you saw last season how difficult it was for [Manchester] United and Newcastle to be involved in the Champions League and Premier League. That is for me the test we have to go through to see if we can stay or be where we are now."
