Trent Alexander-Arnold: Fresh twist on Liverpool future as transfer alternative identified
Real Madrid will try to sign a right-back in the January transfer window, but Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold isn't the only option they are considering
by Felix Keith · The MirrorReal Madrid aren’t solely focusing on Trent Alexander-Arnold and are considering their options at new right-back in the January transfer window.
Alexander-Arnold’s current contract with Liverpool is set to expire at the end of June, meaning he will be able to speak to other clubs in the new year. Liverpool have the same problem with fellow star players Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, but remain relaxed about the situation.
Real are long-term admirers of Alexander-Arnold, who has been coy about his future and is close friends with Los Blancos star Jude Bellingham. The Spanish giants’ need for a new right-back has been accelerated by the serious knee injury to Dani Carvajal, which has left them short in the position.
According to reports from Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti’s side are confident that Alexander-Arnold won’t sign a new deal with his boyhood club. And it has been suggested that the fact he has already won the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool would make a departure easier to stomach for all parties.
Real are not putting all their eggs in one basket, however, with Calciomercato reporting that they are interested in signing Andrea Cambiaso from Juventus. Cambiaso, 24, can play on either flank and is highly-regarded by Juve following a successful loan spell at Bologna in 2022/23.
Aston Villa reportedly saw a €35million (£29m) offer for Cambiaso rejected during the summer, with Juve valuing him higher. He has made 11 appearances for Thiago Motta’s side this season, contributing a goal and an assist while often playing as a right-winger.
Real have also reportedly shortlisted Tottenham star Pedro Porro, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong and Sevilla's Juanlu as other options at right-back. They are currently fielding Lucas Vasquez in the position and the former winger scored in the 5-2 comeback win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Alexander-Arnold is vice-captain at Liverpool and has a strong connection to the club, having come through the academy, but wants to win trophies. "I have always said I want to captain the club, that is an aim of mine and a goal of mine, (but) whether that happens is out of my hands," he said in September.
"Look, I have been at the club 20 years now, I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public. And this one won't be either. I want to be a Liverpool player this season (as a minimum) is what I will say.
"The most important thing is always trophies, if I am honest. I want to win trophies, I am a player who is highly motivated by trophies and winning things and being elite. So that is probably the main factor of anything, if you have a personality that is elite, who wants to win and will do anything to win, then that is what drives me."
