Mike Tyson discovers new heavyweight world ranking after Jake Paul defeat
The 58-year-old suffered a unanimous decision defeat to the YouTuber-turned-boxer in what was his first professional fight in nearly two decades
by James Evans · The MirrorFormer undisputed world champion Mike Tyson has been placed in at 309 in the BoxRec heavyweight rankings following his recent defeat to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.
'Iron Mike' made a sensational return to the squared circle on Friday night against the social media star. Tyson's clash with the 27-year-old was his first professional bout since suffering a defeat to former Irish boxer Kevin McBride in 2005.
However, in his heavyweight dust-up with 'The Problem Child', Tyson was dominated from start to finish. While he did not fall to a knockout defeat, the 58-year-old was still bettered on points. Taking to Twitter after the bout, the legendary fighter wrote: "This is one of those situations when you lost but still won. I’m grateful for last night. No regrets to get in ring one last time.
"I almost died in June. Had 8 blood transfusions. Lost half my blood and 25lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight so I won. To have my children see me stand toe to toe and finish 8 rounds with a talented fighter half my age in front of a packed Dallas Cowboy stadium is an experience that no man has the right to ask for. Thank you."
Tyson's defeat has seen him place in at 309th in the new heavyweight rankings, 183 places behind Paul. The 58-year-old is only three spots ahead of Terrell Jamal Woods, a 35-year-old fighter who has won just one of his last 15 fights and holds a professional record of 29-62. Relatively unknown fighters are placed way above Tyson, including Peter 'The Problem' Naylor.
As for Paul, the young American is currently ranked 126th in the world following his huge win in Texas. Speaking after the fight, when asked if he took his foot off the gas, Paul said: "Yeah, definitely, definitely a bit. I wanted to give the fans a show, but I didn’t want [to hurt him]. I wanted to give the fans a show, but I didn’t want to hurt somebody that didn’t need to be hurt."
While some viewers were left unimpressed by the action - and some even walked out of the AT&T Stadium before the result was announced - there has been plenty of noise in the aftermath. Following his performance, Paul was even called out by the undisputed light-heavyweight world champion, Artur Beterbiev. “@jakepaul what can you do in ring against the current undisputed champion?" Beterbiev wrote on his Instagram page on Saturday. "Just know that I’m always open to any suggestions.”
It was announced on Saturday that more than 60million households streamed the main event on Netflix, which caused the streaming platform to crash several times. The fight's gate, meanwhile, surpassed $18m, double the previous Texas gate record for combat sports in both boxing and MMA, topping Canelo Alvarez's record of $9m.
