Online Marketplace Etsy Tightens AI Rules, Requiring Unedited Product Images and Banning AI-Generated Patterns
by Omar Faridi · Crowdfund InsiderEtsy (NYSE: ETSY) is introducing tighter rules on artificial intelligence across its marketplace after determining that buyer uncertainty over AI-generated listings has become one of the top three obstacles preventing people from shopping more frequently on the platform.
The company outlined the changes in a seller handbook update published October 22, 2026, by James Ossman, vice president of customer operations, emphasizing that AI should support sellers’ creativity and craftsmanship rather than replace them, and that buyers should always be able to understand the human role behind every item.
Under the revised policies, most listings must now include at least one unedited photograph of the actual product set against a real background.
That required image cannot be altered in any way—no cropping, resizing, lighting adjustments, color changes, background swaps, or other modifications.
Additional photos in the same listing may still be edited with conventional tools or AI assistance, provided the final images accurately depict what the buyer will receive and do not conceal flaws, exaggerate quality, or present a materially different item.
Sellers whose images fail to meet these standards and who face a case from a buyer because the received product differs substantially from the listing may be held responsible for refunding the purchase.
The rules also ban AI-generated “functional guides.”
Patterns, recipes, sewing instructions, and similar content that buyers use to produce a finished result must be the seller’s own original work; AI-generated versions are no longer permitted.
Listings for these items must further include a photograph of an actual finished object made by following the instructions, rather than an AI-generated or simulated example, so shoppers know precisely what to expect.
Fully automated, bot-created listings that lack any individualized human involvement are likewise prohibited; such listings will be removed, and repeated violations can lead to the entire shop being taken down.
Etsy will continue to allow AI-generated art and similar products when sellers supply meaningful original prompts or creative direction, disclose the use of AI, and avoid presenting the work as handmade or solely their own creation.
To support compliance, the platform is adding guidance during image uploads that flags potentially AI-generated photos and offers tips for accurate representation.
It is also expanding detection tools to identify misleading or fraudulent listings, introducing a reporting option for shoppers concerned about deceptive AI imagery, and planning further transparency features so buyers can better understand when AI has been used.
The updates respond to feedback from both buyers, who report difficulty distinguishing AI involvement, and sellers, who worry about their handmade or original work appearing alongside misleading AI content.
Exceptions exist for certain categories such as some print-on-demand, digital, customized, and made-to-order items, which are detailed in Etsy’s listing image requirements policy. One AI strategist described the overall approach as the smartest AI content policy seen this year, citing its focus on preserving authentic representation while still permitting limited, disclosed AI assistance.
