by Donovan Erskine · ShacknewsIn 2022, the Apple Store at the Towson Town Center in Maryland’s Baltimore County became the first to unionize under the tech giant. This summer, it’ll close its doors for good. Apple has confirmed the upcoming closure in a decision that’ll impact up to 90 employees.
The Apple Store in Towson, Maryland, will close its doors this June, as reported by the Baltimore Banner. WBAL Radio received a direct confirmation of the decision from an Apple spokesperson. The Towson Apple Store made history when it became the first to unionize in 2022. As part of the collective bargaining agreement, the store’s 90 employees will be given an opportunity to apply for other positions at the company.
Apple cited the departure of other retailers and declining conditions as the reason for the decision. The Towson Town Center shopping mall has lost multiple tenants in recent months.
“We are really disappointed in Apple’s decision, and we will be looking at every single option available to us to advocate for our members, the workers of the store and, frankly, the Baltimore community,” said Kevin Gallagher, a spokesperson for the international association of machinists and aerospace workers, the guild representing the Apple Store workers.
The Towson, Maryland, Apple Store is one of three stores being closed. The other two closing stores are located in Trumbull Mall (Connecticut) and the Shops at North County (California).
