Marathon is finally getting a PVE mode called Vault Breaker

Clear vaults, collect data, and work toward taking on the Compiler without the threat of other players.

Vault Breaker is the first PVE-only mode coming to Marathon during Season 2’s mid-season update. The mode will focus on Cryo Archive and its vaults and Compiler boss fight. Bungie has stated there are restrictions on exfiling with gear to stop it seeping into the main extraction mode economy.

Bungie announced on June 23, 2026 that Marathon will receive its first PVE-only mode in the mid-season update. Called Vault Breaker, this mode allows a crew of three, duos, or solo players to enter the endgame map, Cryo Archive, and complete the vaults. With no other players on the map, this should greatly reduce the stress for players not looking for PVP.

There are some caveats when attempting the Vault Breaker mode. Firstly, players must use a specific Sponsored Kit to even access the mode. By clearing vaults, players will earn Vault Data which can be used to upgrade the Sponsored Kit. This sounds similar to how the Rook can be upgraded and improved through the Factions.

Secondly, anything you find in Vault Breaker is left behind. Picked up a cool weapon and consumables? It gets destroyed on exfil. This ensures the main extraction mode isn’t flooded with easy-to-acquire, powerful gear.

The overarching goal of Vault Breaker is to let players experience Cryo Archive and its vault puzzles and eventually take on the Compiler. Bungie clarified that players would not receive the S’Phticide shell style cosmetic in this mode, as that is restricted to players who earn it in the traditional map with the threat of other teams. However, Vault Breaker will have its own set of cosmetics for players to earn as well as Codex entries.

The mid-season patch will also see the Cradle Evolution system added, which is essentially a prestige mode. Players that max out the Cradle can reset it to earn one additional maximum Energy point and unique cosmetics.

Bungie also revealed that Season 3 begins on September 22 and will include a revamp of Perimeter with “major new areas.” Players can also expect a new Runner shell, weapons, equipment, and more.
