Almost a year ago today, hardware developer Xreal announced its intention to develop extended reality glasses in conjunction with Google. On Tuesday, those glasses were finally unveiled. As part of Google I/O 2026, attendees were treated to a first look at Project Aura, which will run on Google's Android XR operating system and feature compatibility with the company's Gemini AI platform.

First announced last year, the current Project Aura model is built with Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors, though specific specs have not been detailed. These extended reality glasses are wired, so they must be tethered to a compatible smartphone. Developed in conjunction with Google and Qualcomm, features include dynamic video with both massive and mini-screen settings to allow for multitasking, the ability to watch 2D and 3D VR videos from YouTube and other video sources, an updated Google Maps with 3D spatial navigation, and a DisplayPort-in port to allow for a connection with a laptop.

Xreal and Google are also opening the door to developers to begin work on Project Aura. A slew of Android XR games and apps will be available at launch, some of which have live demos at this week's Google I/O event. However, Xreal and Google have also announced the Android XR Developer Catalyst Program, which will deliver Project Aura dev kits to select developers.

Xreal and Google expect to launch Project Aura globally later in 2026. More details can be found on the Xreal website.
