Rainbow Six Siege Operation System Override reworks Dokkaebi and returns to Calypso Casino
The classic Rainbow Six Vegas map is getting a new look for modern Rainbow Six Siege.
by Ozzie Mejia · ShacknewsAs one might expect from the name of a season called Operation System Override, Rainbow Six Siege is about to revisit one of its most notorious hacker characters. For Year 11 Season 2, Ubisoft Montreal outlined a total rework for Dokkaebi. She was already an active irritant before, but now she's about to get much more dangerous.
Dokkaebi could already make some noise on the battlefield through her Logic Bomb laptop, but now it's being upgraded to the Jegeo Payload. Previously, the Logic Bomb could activate enemy mobile devices and give away their locations. The Jegeo Payload goes a step further. If a Defender thinks that they can live with their phone vibrating for the rest of the round, the Jegeo Payload will actually overheat that device and detonate it, inflicting significant damage. If a Defender's phone explodes, they'll no longer have access to their network for the rest of the round. It's a much more devastating effect, but there are a few drawbacks. Dokkaebi's hack no longer affects the whole team at a time. It's now a targeted hack. Furthermore, enemies must be exposed before the Jegeo Payload can infect their devices.
Of course, Dokkaebi was already considered one of Siege's more unfair Operators. After all, she was capable of hacking into enemy phones and gaining intel for the rest of the round, putting Defenders at a severe disadvantage. That has now changed, as Dokkaebi can now access hacked phones from fallen opponents from anywhere in the map, but any intel she gains from them will only be for a limited time.
There are a few other Operators that are going to receive some balance changes. Gridlock will receive a few buffs with the newly strengthened Trax gadget. Trax will now deploy faster, last longer, and inflict a limping effect on affected enemies for ten seconds. As far as balance changes for other Attackers, Nomad's detection range will be slightly increased, Deimos will have a reduced wait time for his gadget after identifying targets, Solis will have increased stats for her gadget, and Zofia will have a slightly increased speed buff and a slight armor nerf. Only two Defenders are being addressed with Mozzie getting an increased Pest Launcher capture range and Pulse getting an increased scan distance.
The other big addition to Operation System Override is the new Calypso Casino map, inspired by the classic map from Rainbow Six Vegas. This is a fancy tower filled with table games and lavish decor, but also several distinct bomb sites. The blackjack room on the second floor is easy enough to find, but tough to penetrate. The basement area feels closed off, ideal for defensive bomb placement, but if it's not in use, the security setup can offer a glimpse into the rest of the casino grounds. Plus, there are multiple vents that span different floors, creating ideal drone placement for wider shots. While it's easy to walk into Calypso from the front door, there are several entry points from outside the tower, but navigating the construction areas can prove to be a challenge for those unfamiliar with the map's layout.
The last thing to note is that Ranked 3.0 is being slightly tweaked for the new season. Look for a soft reset and the return of placement matches. There are no squad restrictions during these five placement matches. Squad restrictions will kick in afterwards, but be more relaxed than they were in Siege's original ranked system. Everyone will now be eligible for progression-based rewards, though winners will get to their quarry slightly faster. Those ready to jump into Siege with their mouse and keyboard can now do so on any platform, but be aware that console players who are using a mouse and keyboard setup will be thrown into the PC matchmaking pool.
Rainbow Six Siege's Operation System Override update is coming in just a few weeks. It'll be available on all platforms on Tuesday, June 2.
This preview is based on a Discord briefing with the developers, as well as an early PC test build played remotely with the development team. The final product is subject to change.
