Is Icebreaker PvP or PvE in Escape from Tarkov?

Icebreaker brings another premier endgame activity to Escape from Tarkov, but is it a PvE or PvP map?

Icebreaker is a massive addition to the endgame of Escape from Tarkov. It’s a blindingly difficult, instanced raid filled with deadly enemies, new and returning bosses, and plenty of loot. But is there PvP on Icebreaker, or is it solely a PvE experience?

Icebreaker in Escape from Tarkov is an entirely PvE experience, much like Terminal before it. The two activities are different in almost every other way that matters, save that you Transit to the Icebreaker ship from Shoreline.

First of all, Icebreaker is meant as a repeatable, high-difficulty, highly rewarding endgame activity for only the most dedicated and hardcore Tarkov players. The enemies you face start with Raiders like you’d find on Reserve, and things quickly escalate when Knight from the Goons shows up.

Shortly thereafter, the deadly Black Division faction swarms the ship, equipped with high-end gear and even higher-tuned aim and reaction times. There are even Black Division bosses with superhuman reaction times and more health than should be possible.

The space itself is large, but very claustrophobic. It’s all hallways, close quarters, and surprise attacks. Advancing through the map is a laborious process where death is always one bullet from nowhere away.

Icebreaker is also home to several puzzles similar to what we’ve seen in Tarkov previously: opaque, oddly or nebulously explained, and crafted to be solved by the community. I’ve seen comparisons to Marathon’s Cryo Archive, though any such discussions are somewhat moot as Cryo is designed from the ground up to encourage high-intensity PvP.

What is certain is that if you go into Icebreaker, expect to die. A lot. No amount of experience or skill can truly prepare you for what awaits on that ship, and it is only by throwing yourself unto the breach that you can master it.

Have spare gear ready. You’ll need it.
