by COLlive Editor · COLliveRabbi Yisroel Rubin, longtime Shliach of the Rebbe to Albany, NY and Head Shliach of Chabad of the Capital Region and Northeast NY State, passed away after participating in his Shul at Hakafos on the night of Shmeini Atzeres, 5787.
He was 78.
He was the son of the Chassid Reb Moshe and Yocheved Miriam Rubin of Montreal.
He arrived on Shlichus in Albany on Sukkos 5734, this marks 52 complete years of Shlichus, nearly to the day.
Rabbi Rubin was known for his innovative creative projects, publications and mitzvah promotions, ranging from “The Torah Times” as a bochur to the Neshek matchbooks he made when first arriving in Albany, many relevant and engaging articles, and a unique approach to education. He was a founder of Albany’s Maimonides School in 1980 and stood at the helm of the school and a growing regional network of Shluchim and Chabad Houses until his recent illness, remaining involved throughout.
Rabbi Rubin credited his unique approach of Torah learning to a single Rebbe’s farbrengen that focused his lens of Torah study. He authored a scholarly work on two paragraphs of the Haggadah titled “Marbeh L’Saper” and has another 600+ page Sefer titled “Hirhurei Torah” that will hopefully soon be published. Learning and teaching Torah was always central to his life and Shlichus even in his last years during his illness.
He was continuously inspired throughout the years of his Shlichus by the “Vayeitzei-Vayishlach Letter” the Rebbe sent to this 5th year anniversary of Capital Region Chabad.
Rabbi Yisroel Rubin is survived by his wife and Shlichus partner Rochel Rubin, and his children R’ Mendel (University at Albany), R’ Abba (Saratoga Springs NY), R’ Yossi (Clifton Park NY), R’ Shmuly (Union College Schenectady NY), Devorah Leah Mathless (Albany NY), Rivky Cohen (Manchester, England), R’ Efraimg4tv (Brooklyn), R’ Simmy (Albany), Mushky (Brooklyn), R’ Motti (Colonie NY), as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sisters Rochel Zaklos (Detroit), Esther Chanowitz (Montreal), and Sara Yuzevitz (Brooklyn).
He was predeceased by his daughter Esty Cohen (Manchester, England).
The levaya and kevurah will be in Albany NY, his place of pioneering and life-long dedicated Shlichus.
