Operation Survival, a project of NCFJE, has released its newest Prevention 101 book ahead of the summer season.

Prevention 101: Summer Safety

With summer approaching and children preparing for camp and time away from home, many parents naturally feel a mix of excitement and concern. Questions about safety, independence, screen time, peer influence, and emotional readiness become especially relevant during this season.

Parents from the community were invited to submit questions such as: “How do I prepare my child for camp?” “How often should I call my child at camp?” “How are medications handled at camp, and what should I disclose to staff?” and “How do I help my child cope with homesickness and peer pressure?”

Others asked: “How should parents approach conversations about personal safety?” or, for children at home, “How can I prevent meltdowns when screen time ends?” “Will eliminating screens make my child feel like the ‘weird kid’ or create a forbidden-fruit effect?”

Qualified professionals addressed these and many other questions directly, offering honest, practical guidance. Their insights were then organized into clear, accessible chapters designed to support families before and during the summer months.

Special thanks to Devora Krasnianski for managing the project, conducting several interviews, and overseeing the editing process, and to Rabbi Yaacov Behrman for overseeing the initiative. Appreciation is also extended to all the professionals who contributed their expertise, the many parents who submitted thoughtful questions, and the office of Sen. Zellnor Myrie for its continued support of Operation Survival and the communities it serves.

Printed copies will be mailed to Crown Heights Anash in the coming weeks. The online edition is being released early, as many of these important conversations with children should begin now—well before summer starts.

This is the third book in the Prevention 101 series. The first focused on bullying, and the second addressed trauma following the events of October 7.
