Anticipation runs high as Kuching, KL City set for decisive Christmas Eve clash
by Matthew Umpang · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Dec 23): The fight for second place in the Malaysia Super League has become the season’s most compelling storyline after Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) pulled clear at the summit, and will take centrestage on Christmas Eve when Kuala Lumpur City FC host Kuching City FC at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras.
While the Johor side continue to dominate, the battle for the No 2 spot has grown increasingly intense, with both KL City and Kuching City having locked on 24 points heading into Matchday 13.
The winner of Wednesday’s clash will not only strengthen their grip on that second place, but will also gain a crucial psychological edge heading into the new year.
Kuching City currently occupy the second spot by virtue of a superior goal difference of +19 and arrive in Kuala Lumpur riding high on confidence as the Sarawak-based side produced a commanding 4-0 victory over Melaka FC in their previous outing, further underlining their rapid rise this season under head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak.
With just one defeat in 11 matches, the Cats have shed their underdog tag and are now regarded as genuine title challengers behind JDT.
KL City, however, remain firmly in the hunt and are keen on making home advantage count.
The City Boys have shown admirable consistency despite a congested schedule, having just battled it out to a draw against Negeri Sembilan before recording a convincing 3-0 win over Melaka.
Known for their discipline and resilience, KL City are determined to halt Kuching City’s momentum in front of their home supporters.
Recent meetings between the two sides suggest a closely-fought contest as Kuching City claimed a 3-1 league win over KL City in October last year, and edged them 3-2 in an FA Cup tie earlier in the year.
However, KL City have shown that they can be difficult to break down at Cheras, having previously held the Cats to a 1-1 draw at the venue.
With JDT out in front, the Christmas Eve clash promises to be a defining moment in the race for second place, as both teams push hard for three vital points in a season where the margins are becoming increasingly fine.
The match kicks off at 8.15pm on Wednesday.
