MIRI (Jan 13): Chinese calligraphy competitions provide an opportunity for people of different ethnicities to learn and appreciate Chinese culture, said Datuk Rosey Yunus.

The Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development said apart from fostering racial unity, such competitions allow non-Chinese participants to showcase their artistic skills and ability in writing calligraphy.

“Additionally, such competitions help preserve this form of art writing so that it is not lost over time,” said the Bekenu assemblywoman.

She was speaking when officiating a Chinese calligraphy competition organised by the Batu Niah Buddhist Association at SJKC Chee Mung on Saturday.

Adding on, Rosey noted that Chinese calligraphy is a test of an individual’s patience and self-discipline in shaping their character.

“This competition today should be held annually and introduced to our younger generation. I also hope that this event can eventually progress to higher-level competitions,” she added.

Among those present were Batu Niah Buddhist Association chairman Councillor Chong Tet Fat, Penghulu Pui Kuan Phen, and community leaders from the Batu Niah and Sepupok areas.
