KUCHING (Oct 6): Respecting and loving the elderly are the key Chinese traditions and social values that must be preserved to foster a caring society, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He emphasised the importance of upholding these traditions and values to ensure they are passed down to future generations.

“Without this foundation, we would not be able to enjoy what we have today. Taking myself for example, if my late father had not sent me to school, I would not become who I am today,” the Batu Kawa assemblyman said at a dinner organised by the Batu Kawa Social Welfare Organisation last night.

The dinner, held at the school hall of SJK Chung Hua Batu Kawa in the Batu Kawa Old Bazaar, was dedicated to appreciating the organisation’s elderly members.

Dr Sim, who is Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, stressed the need to instil these values in the younger generation for the betterment of the society.

He stated that children should be taught to respect and care for the older generation to preserve the traditional values.

“We are always proud of our traditional Chinese cultures, but if we do not pass these down to our next generation, it will be a great loss,” he said.

He added that leading by example is essential for the younger generation to emulate and maintain a more caring and harmonious society.

Regarding the welfare organisation, Dr Sim said it has played a key role in driving for more development of his constituency.

He highlighted that community-based organisations (CBOs) are the cornerstone of the society, fostering progress and advancement.

“Without this foundation, we might not have achieved the progress we see today,” said the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party president.

He appealed to CBOs to continue upholding their pivotal roles in nation-building, especially as Sarawak is currently undergoing vast development.
