KUCHING (Jan 2): A total of 52 flood victims from 12 families have been evacuated to the Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) Kampung Sungai Batu, located at Surau Ar-Rahman, following recent floods in the village.

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Dato Sri Nancy Shukri, said during a visit to the PPS that several other evacuation centres in Kuching are also accommodating victims.

“The Stapok Community Hall currently houses 178 victims, while Surau Nurul Najihin in Kampung Stapok shelters 56 victims.

“Another PPS at Masjid Darul Istiqlal in Kampung Sungai Maong has recorded seven victims,” Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Dato Sri Nancy Shukri told reporters during a visit to the Kampung Sungai Batu PPS here.

She added that among the PPS with higher numbers are Dewan Sinar Budi with 208 victims, SJK(C) Chung Hua Batu Kawa (205), Dewan Serbaguna Taman Malihah (163), and SJK(C) Chung Hua Sungai Tengah (179).

She also noted that the Samarahan Civic Centre remains active with 23 victims from eight households, while in Limbang, the PPS at Dewan Masyarakat Terusan is sheltering 39 victims from seven households.

Nancy highlighted that psychological support teams and volunteers have been deployed to assist evacuees, particularly children, helping reduce stress and ensure their welfare during their stay at the PPS.

“We have the Psychological Support Team — about 270 personnel — and 230 Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKM) volunteers. Those you saw engaging with the children are among our counsellors and volunteers.

“We do not want the victims temporarily sheltering in the PPS to feel bored,” she said.

She also reminded flood victims to register via the JKM Disaster Information Account (MyIBJKM) system to ensure proper coordination and assistance.

“As many of you know, we have implemented self-registration via the MyIBJKM system, which was launched earlier in Kuching and is now used nationwide.

“This helps prevent complaints related to claims and ensures that everyone has access to the facilities and assistance provided,” she added, noting that the opening and operation of PPS are carried out in stages to safeguard the safety and welfare of evacuees.

Accompanying Nancy was State Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.
