SIBU (Sept 28): The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (Motac) will come up with a mechanism to address concerns over the check-in and check-out timing issues in hotels across the country.

Its Minister Dato Sri Tiong King Sing acknowledged that the issue, which has gained traction on social media, could impact the country’s hospitality industry.

“I understand the concerns voiced by the public and the stakeholders and have instructed Motac to organise a special meeting with all the relevant parties, especially the hotel industry operators after I return home,” he said in a statement.

Tiong was responding to the recent controversy surrounding check-in and check-out timings being enforced by numerous hotels nationwide.

The Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman added that the upcoming special meeting would thoroughly discuss the matter to ensure a fair resolution that does not burden customers.

“It is Motac’s priority to ensure the practices and policies implemented by hotels are in line with the interest of consumers, while ensuring the survival of a competitive and sustainable hospitality industry,” he added.

Tiong also assured that Motac would take immediate and effective action to address the issue, noting that the views and suggestions of all stakeholders would be considered in the decision-making process to keep Malaysia’s hospitality industry both competitive and customer-friendly.

Tiong is currently representing Malaysia at the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Conference, and will address the issue upon his return.
