Floods forecast in 10 Sarawak divisions until Dec 17

KUCHING (Dec 13): Flooding is forecast to occur in low-lying areas near river basins across 10 divisions in Sarawak from Dec 13 to Dec 17, according to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).

In a notice issued on Friday, DID said the warning follows an alert-level continuous rain warning issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) for multiple districts in the state.

“The affected Divisions include Betong, Bintulu, Kapit, Kuching, Limbang, Miri, Serian, Sri Aman, Sibu, and Mukah.

“In Kuching, floods have been forecast to occur in areas near the Sibu Laut (Sg Sibu) and Sg Sarawak (Sg Tabo, Batang Salak) river basins; in Serian, the floods will affect areas near Batang Sadong,” DID said.

Floods have also been forecast in Betong (Batang Krian and Batang Saribas river basins) and Sri Aman (Batang Lupar basin).

In central Sarawak, floods have been forecast in Sibu’s Batang Rajang and Batang Balingian (Sg Lemai) basins; Mukah at river basins in Btg Rajang (Btg Igan), Batang Balingian and Sg Lemai, Batang Oya and Batang Mukah; Btg Balingian (Btg Balingian and Sg Lemai); Bintulu (Batang Kemena and Batang Tatau basins) and Kapit (Batang Rajang – near Btg Baleh, Btg Belaga, Sg Tiau, Btg Rajang, Sg Mukoh, Btg Balui, Sg Katibas, Sg Gaat and Sg Melinau).

In northern Sarawak, flood risks are forecast for areas near the Batang Baram and Sungai Miri river basins in Miri, as well as the Sungai Limbang, Batang Trusan and Batang Lawas river basins in Limbang.
