There’s something about the start of the fall season that makes me want to reset my entire routine, from getting my skin back on track after a summer of sweat and SPF, to giving my hair some much-needed attention. After months of chlorine and heat, autumn is the perfect time to get rid of those brittle ends and lean into a new haircut.
So, if you needed an excuse for a fresh chop, there are tons of fall-ready haircuts to choose from. I spoke with celebrity hairstylists Dimitris Giannetos and Marc Ballance for all their insight on the best fall hair trends. “The focus is on softness, movement, and healthy-looking hair this season,” says Ballance. “The haircut should work with the natural texture and density of the hair, not feel forced or overdone.”

Wispy is the name of the game when it comes to bangs this season, and they look especially chic with longer hair, where the feathered pieces add shape around the face without taking away from the length at the ends. “I see wispy bangs like Joey’s, with intentional layering becoming very important this fall,” says Giannetos. “They are fantastic to highlight rich auburns and browns, which are highly popular hues this season.”

Celebs like Gracie Abrams and Zendaya have been growing out their pixie cuts into a sweeping longer style, with outward-flicking pieces that have earned the look the nickname “flixie.” Style the look with a side part to create more shape, sweeping front pieces, and side bangs.

For medium-length hair, the C-cut is getting a soft and modern update. Giannetos recommends this romantic take on the look, which he calls the “Love Layers.” “The ‘Love Layers’ are perfect because the heart-shaped layers give volume at the crown while keeping the bottom more narrow, and it creates beautiful movement to give the face a natural contour, like this look I did on Gigi.”

The lived-in bob is all about making shorter lengths feel less rigid and more effortless. “I’m drawn to bobs with layering, texture, and movement,” says Ballance. Giannetos, the mastermind behind Penelope Cruz’s look above, says, “It’s all about hair that feels free, like you’re holding onto the luxury of the style you wore on a chic Friday night out, but with a more relaxed finish.”

Who says the grow-out length has to be awkward? The clavicut is a short-to-mid-cut that turns that post-bob length into an intentional style, with strands that sweep right across the collarbone. “I’m seeing a lot of inspiration coming from Hailey Bieber’s lob,” says Ballance, apropos of her longer take on it.
