Horizon Europe digital funding call attracts 250 proposals across key innovation areas

by · Open Access Government

The latest Horizon Europe digital funding call has attracted significant interest across the research and innovation community, with 250 proposals submitted before the 15th April 2026 deadline

The Horizon Europe digital funding call is part of Cluster 4: Digital, Industry and Space. The amount of interest in this call shows strong engagement in advancing Europe’s technological capabilities in artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced materials.

The submissions were spread across three main topics, each targeting critical areas of digital transformation. The highest number of proposals, 108, was recorded under the topic focused on innovative advanced materials with enhanced sensing capabilities.

Artificial intelligence also attracted considerable attention. A total of 83 proposals were submitted for next-generation AI agents designed for real-world applications, particularly in sectors where applied AI can deliver tangible economic and societal benefits. Meanwhile, 59 proposals focused on agile and intelligent robotics platforms, highlighting continued investment in automation for both industrial and service environments.

Funding and competition

The indicative budgets for these topics underline the competitive nature of the call. The AI agents topic carries a budget of €38 million, followed by €25 million for robotics platforms and €22.5 million for advanced materials. With proposal numbers significantly exceeding the number of likely funded projects, applicants face a highly selective evaluation process.

The volume of submissions suggests a competitive ecosystem in which organisations are actively seeking to contribute to Europe’s leadership in emerging digital technologies. It also reflects alignment with broader EU priorities, including sustainability, industrial competitiveness, and digital sovereignty.

Focus on green and human-centred innovation

Cluster 4 plays a key role in supporting Europe’s twin green and digital transitions. The call emphasises not only technological advancement but also the importance of ethical, human-centred development. This approach aims to ensure that innovations in AI, robotics, and materials are aligned with societal values and contribute to sustainable growth.

By supporting research in these areas, the programme supports the European Green Deal and strengthens the continent’s capacity to compete globally in key technology sectors.

Evaluation of the submitted proposals is currently underway, with results expected to be communicated in July 2026. Successful projects will move forward to contribute to cutting-edge developments under the Horizon Europe framework.

The strong response to the Horizon Europe digital funding call underscores the continued importance of EU funding programmes in driving innovation and cross-border collaboration. As the Horizon Europe programme progresses through its 2025–2027 strategic phase, these calls are a cornerstone for advancing Europe’s research and innovation ambitions.
