Korea Box Office: ‘The Odyssey’ Bests ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

“The Odyssey” sailed to the top of the South Korean box office during the weekend of Aug. 7–9.

According to data from KOBIS, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the Christopher Nolan-directed epic generated $10.3 million from 1,333,569 admissions over the three-day frame across 1,798 screens, capturing a 45.13% share of total weekend revenue. Since launching wide on Aug. 5, the tentpole has collected $14.4 million from 1,874,863 admissions.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” moved to second place in its second frame, bringing in $9.2 million from 1,264,788 admissions over the weekend. The film captured a 40.38% share of the frame, pushing its overall South Korean cume to $43.7 million from 5,916,425 total admissions.

Local animated sequel “Teenieping: Legend of the Whale Heartstone” was in third place, generating $1.9 million from 289,464 admissions over the frame. Directed by Kim Soo-hoon, the musical fantasy sequel follows Princess Romi, Heartsping, and their companions as they journey into a deep-sea city to rescue Queen Velita. Counting previews, the film has accumulated $2.8 million from 433,807 viewers.

“Hope” finished in fourth place with $748,364 from 100,904 admissions over its fourth weekend. Directed by Na Hong-Jin and starring Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander, the film has now reached a total of $33.2 million from 4,393,885 ticket buyers.

Faith-based animated production “David” claimed fifth place, adding $111,506 from 16,860 admissions and has a gross of $1.9 million from 289,350 total viewers.

“Minions & Monsters” took sixth place, adding $92,550 from 14,616 admissions for a total of $5.3 million from 763,307 viewers.

Japanese director Tomoaki Fujino’s family documentary “What Should We Have Done?” placed seventh, bringing in $86,947 from 12,030 tickets over its second weekend frame for a cume of $353,255.

Toho’s anime mystery entry “Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway” landed in eighth place ahead of its wide release, pulling in $79,796 from 8,828 admissions across preview screenings. Directed by Takahiro Hasui, the latest film in the franchise follows Conan Edogawa as he investigates a high-speed conspiracy behind a series of deadly highway disasters.

“Toy Story 5” placed ninth with $43,972 from 6,389 admissions, extending its local gross to $21.3 million from 2,939,376 tickets.

Rounding out the top 10 was the local action-comedy sequel “OK! Madam: Bon Voyage,” which captured $31,448 from 3,909 admissions across preview screenings. Directed by Lee Cheol-ha and starring Uhm Jung-hwa, Park Sung-woong, Lee Sang-yun, and Sooyoung, the comedy follows a former secret agent whose luxury cruise vacation turns into a high-stakes hostage crisis when a ruthless criminal syndicate strikes. The title has gathered $81,887 from 11,783 total viewers ahead of its Aug. 12 launch.

The overall market collective gross for the weekend was $22.9 million, making it the biggest weekend of the year, surpassing last week’s $20.8 million.
