Justin Long and Iris Apatow Circling Killer Bee Survival Thriller ‘Stung’ (EXCLUSIVE)

by · Variety

Justin Long and Irish Apatow are in negotiations to star in survival thriller “Stung,” now gearing up for production.

The film comes from director Colin Minihan, who recently directed Long and Kate Bosworth in “Coyotes,” and is produced by Andre Relis and Jib Polhemus, with VMI Worldwide set to introduce the film to worldwide buyers in Cannes.

Set against the backdrop of suburban isolation and mounting paranoia, “Stung” follows four teenage girls whose innocent sleepover spirals into a nightmare when they become trapped inside a luxury Orange County home overtaken by a massive swarm of Africanized killer bees.

“’Stung’ taps into a very primal fear,” said Minihan. “You’re trapped, isolated, and under attack from something unstoppable. But beneath the horror, it’s also a story about friendship, trust, and survival under pressure.”

Additional casting and production details will be announced in the coming months.

“We were immediately drawn to the film’s contained intensity and commercial concept,” said Relis and Polhemus. “Colin has a fantastic visual style and a strong command of suspense, and we believe Stung has the potential to become a standout genre title for audiences worldwide.”

This is the third feature between Relis and Polhemus, who most recently produced “The Night Driver” with Josh Lucas and Alyssa Milano and screening at the Cannes market.

Minihan’s most recent feature, “Coyotes — a genre-bending horror/comedy starring Long and Kate Bosworth — was produced by Capstone Studios and premiered at Fantastic Fest. His previous film, “What Keeps You Alive,” which he wrote, directed, and edited on a micro budget, premiered at SXSW and was named a Critics’ Pick by The New York Times. Minihan co-wrote and produced the Shudder breakouts “Still/Born,” “Z” and “Spiral” through his Canadian production company, and co-wrote and co-directed the horror film “Grave Encounters.” He is also the co-founder and owner of DI Post, a Los Angeles–based visual effects and post-production company.

Justin Long is represented by IAG and Yorn Levine. Iris Apatow is represented by UTA, 3 Arts, and Ziffren Brittenham.
