Chad Smith Delivers Will Ferrell’s ‘SNL’ Monologue: ‘You’re Not the Host, I Am’

by · Variety

Chad Smith threw Studio 8H for a spin when he took the “Saturday Night Live” stage, impersonating this week’s host Will Ferrell.

“I’m thrilled to be back hosting ‘Saturday Night Live,'” said the Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer, whose resemblance to Ferrell has been joked about for decades. “I was a cast member here for seven years. And now I’m hosting for the sixth time!”

After a minute, Ferrell rushed on stage and asked, “What the hell do you think you’re doing? You’re not the host. I am!” Ferrell continued, “What the hell is wrong with you? He pushed me down backstage. And I fell, hard. Lorne had to give me mouth-to-mouth. Seriously, what are you even doing here?”

After Ferrell finally banished Smith from the stage, he took a question from the audience, calling on “the cute one” — musical guest Paul McCartney.

“I have a question. What do you think you’re doing, Chad?” the Beatle asked Ferrell, who replied: “Look, I understand your confusion. Me and Chad do look a lot alike. But I’m Will. I’m hosting tonight.”

McCartney: “Nice try, Chad. Get back. Get back behind the drums where you belong.”

Ferrell then began naming some of the great songs written by McCartney over the years, drawing out the bit by listing 17 Beatles, Wings and McCartney hits. “But people often forget there’s some great songs you didn’t write,” Ferrell continued. “The alphabet song. ‘Timber’ featuring Pitbull. All the Smash Mouth stuff.”

McCartney’s only rebuttal: “Get your ass behind the drums, Chad.”
