‘Verity’ Trailer: Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson Play Seductive Mind Games in Colleen Hoover Thriller

by · Variety

Will lightning strike a fourth time for Colleen Hoover?

Amazon MGM has released the trailer for the twisted thriller “Verity,” the author’s fourth novel to get the big screen treatment in two years. Hoover’s three prior films, “It Ends With Us,” “Reminders of Him” and “Regretting You,” all scored at the box office. “Verity” opens in theaters on Oct. 2.

“Verity” stars Dakota Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling novelist who gets hired to finish the latest book from best-selling author Verity Crawford, played by Anne Hathaway, after an accident leaves her unable to complete it. As Lowen works to complete the project, she discovers a disturbing unfinished manuscript that raises questions about Verity’s mental stability. Josh Hartnett, Brady Wagner, Asel Swango and Daniel Echevarria round out the cast.

In the official teaser, Lowen is slinking around the Crawford family house wearing a silk robe while Verity is fast asleep in bed. With Verity essentially bed-ridden, her husband Jeremy strikes up a romance with Lowen. But as the two lock lips, Lowen notices blood on mouth and she realizes that something even more sinister is happening. It’s not Jeremy she’s kissing, but Verity. Lowen leans back and shrieks in sheer horror.

“Darkness ahead,” Verity hints in the two-minute-long teaser.

This year marks Amazon MGM’s first with a full theatrical slate. After missing the mark with January and February’s “Mercy,” “Crime 101” and “Melania,” the studio has been enjoying a much-needed box office win with “Project Hail Mary,” which has grossed $600 million worldwide so far. “Verity” seems poised to score, given Hoover’s promising box office track record. The popular author’s hot streak of 2024’s “It Ends With Us,” 2025’s “Regretting You” and this year’s “Reminders of Him” have underscored a demand for female-focused stories.

Before “Verity” hits theaters in October, Amazon MGM will release “The Sheep Detectives,” the Nicholas Galitzine-led “Masters of the Universe” and “How to Rob a Bank” from “John Wick” director David Leitch.
