Directed and produced by journalist and filmmaker Janay Boulos and activist and cameraman Abd Alkader Habak, “Birds of War” is a “deeply intimate documentary that reframes one of the defining conflicts of our time through an extraordinary real-life love story,” Dogwoof said. “Preserved through the power of their own archive material, their story is told through voice notes, texts and video diaries, as the film unfolds in real time, offering a rare and deeply human perspective on war as it is lived and recorded.”
Jon Reiss, president at 8 Above, said: “Boulos and Habak have created a masterly crafted film that transcends the brutality of war, connecting us with the very essence of humanity – our capacity for love. This is exactly the kind of story 8 Above wants to bring to audiences – bold, important and completely unforgettable.”
The film received its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Journalistic Impact and has since picked up major international prize wins, including the Audience Award at Visions du Reel, and a record four awards at Thessaloniki, plus the Grand Jury prize at Seattle Intl. Film Festival.
The film is produced by Sonja Henrici (“Merkel,” “The Oil Machine”), and is supported by Screen Scotland.
