The release caps a major run for “KPop Demon Hunters,” which became one of Netflix’s biggest original film breakouts after releasing last June. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and produced in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, the film follows K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey — voiced by Arden Cho, May Hong and Ji-young Yoo — who lead double lives as demon hunters when they aren’t selling out stadiums.
The film, which won the Oscar for best animated feature, broke multiple records over the past year. It became the most streamed movie of 2025 while its corresponding soundtrack hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The lead single “Golden” remained at No. 1 on the Hot 100, with the film becoming the first soundtrack to place four songs in the chart’s top 10 at the same time.
The film has also spawned dozens of lucrative partnerships and licensing deals. In fact, Mattel and Hasbro, fierce rivals, were named a global “co-master” toy licensee for “KPop Demon Hunters — a dual license structure believed to be unprecedented in the industry. Themed products such as Uno, Monopoly, and dolls have begun rolling out this spring.
A sequel is currently in development at Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation, with Kang and Appelhans returning. In the meantime, you can pre-order the original fim on Criterion below:
