‘Job’ Playwright Max Wolf Friedlich Sets Next Play ‘The Holes’ With Robert Pattinson to Executive Produce (EXCLUSIVE)
by Rebecca Rubin · VarietyPlaywright Max Wolf Friedlich, who made his Broadway debut with the buzzy thriller “Job,” is returning to the New York stage. His new show “The Holes” will premiere off-Broadway this fall.
Robert Pattinson is executive producing “The Holes” with Brighton McCloskey through their company Icki Eneo Arlo, marking the team’s first foray into theater. “The Holes” takes place in a decaying bar in a rapidly gentrifying city upstate, where a mysterious, padlocked back room offers pleasure, relief, and “perhaps something far more dangerous,” according to the official logline. Described as a “darkly comic exploration of our strange new world,” the show promises to explore “tensions between shame and desire, tradition and progress, community and individualism.”
Previews begin at the East Village’s The Wild Project on Sept. 8 ahead of an opening night on Sept. 22. It’s scheduled to run for six weeks, through Oct. 18.
Friedlich is best known for writing the anxiety-inducing psychological thriller “Job,” which starred “Succession” alumni Sydney Lemmon and Peter Friedman and provocatively opened with a stressed woman pointing a gun at her therapist. A two-hander, the play revolves around a psychologist who is hired to evaluate a patient’s ability to return to work after a forced leave of absence. “Job” became a surprise hit Off Broadway at Soho Playhouse in 2023 before transferring to Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theater in 2024. Given its provocative nature, “Job” was one of the season’s most talked-about plays, with the New York Times calling the show “extremely effective, often funny and quasi-sadistic.”
Bubba Weiler, Grantham Coleman, and Tina Benko will star in “The Holes,” which will be directed by Michael Herwitz, who worked with Friedlich on “Job.” Dramaturg Hannah Getts is producing alongside Voyeur Productions, Adam Rodner, and co-producers Cathy Sarkowsky, Alex Levy, Elizabeth Salem, Jeff and Caryl Hahn.
The creative team for “The Holes” includes scenic designer Anna Grigo, lighting designer Evan Anderson, sound designer Brandon Bulls, costume designer Lily Cucinelli, creative director Stef Kohli, head of marketing Ian Tarbert, graphic designer Julian Alicea, general manager Mix and Match Productions and production counsel Jenny Waxman.
