‘Common Wealth’ Documentary to Open in Australia, New Zealand (EXCLUSIVE)
by Naman Ramachandran · Variety“Common Wealth,” a documentary filmed across eight countries probing alternatives to prevailing economic and political systems, will open in Australian and New Zealand cinemas on June 23. Madman Entertainment is releasing the film through its Garage Films division.
The project is the debut documentary feature from writer-director-presenter Kane Guglielmi, who frames his own journey through the film as that of a conservatively raised capitalist seeking greater prosperity beyond the models he grew up with. Guglielmi produced the film via his company Darkwood Entertainment. Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave is among those who appear in it. Guglielmi will undertake a promotional tour of more than 30 cities across Australia and New Zealand beginning on opening day.

“As I enter my fourth year on this global journey, I must admit, the timing of its ultimate theatrical release feels rather uncanny. What seemed like a subject matter of somewhat distant relevance in 2022 seems to have suddenly shifted to the forefront of the minds of the majority. Without a doubt divine intervention,” Guglielmi said.
The film engages with themes of housing insecurity, cost-of-living pressure, political division and global conflict.
“Given the global nature of ‘Common Wealth’ and its timely and poignant themes, my ambition is to take the film beyond Australian shores to an international audience. It’s deeply connecting and inspiring all walks of life. People are desperately searching for hope and reasons to be positive for the future in such confusing and divisive times,” Guglielmi said.
“I haven’t been so inspired in years,” said Jordan Kerner, whose producing credits include “Fried Green Tomatoes,” “The Smurfs” and “Clifford the Big Red Dog.”
