17yo Left Severely Injured After Playing With Modified Fireworks in Port Dickson
by Hariz · WORLD OF BUZZFireworks are commonly used during festive periods in Malaysia, such as Hari Raya and other celebrations, often leading to a spike in dangerous and illegal use despite repeated warnings from authorities.
In one such incident, a teenage boy suffered serious injuries after using 20 mercun bola (ball fireworks) to create a loud explosion in Port Dickson.
Negeri Sembilan Police Chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said police received a report at around 6:17 PM on Thursday (19 March) involving a 17-year-old victim.
According to him, initial investigations found that the incident occurred on 12 March at about 11 PM in Bandar Springhill, Lukut.
Modified the fireworks
The victim and his friends were believed to have used approximately 20 ball fireworks and modified the materials by sprinkling sulphur into a hole in a net post before inserting a ball firework to produce a stronger explosion.
“When the victim attempted to light a lighter, a powerful explosion occurred, resulting in the victim sustaining severe injuries, including injuries to his fingers and palms, ruptured eardrums in both ears, a broken nose, and minor wounds to the face,” he told Kosmo!.
Alzafny added that the victim is currently receiving treatment at Hospital Port Dickson, and the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives, Corrosive Substances and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958.
