“Everyone came together respectfully”- M’sians Gather On Roblox To Honour Late Tun Dr Hasmah, Garner Praise Online

Following the passing of Malaysia’s cherished former First Lady, Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali, a unique memorial tribute emerged on the online gaming platform Roblox, where a full-scale, solemn Yasin recitation was held.

Footage of the virtual gathering quickly spread across social media after being shared via a livestream by TikTok streamer HilmiStone. Out of all places, few would have expected Roblox to become the setting for a tribute to the late Dr Hasmah.

A virtual gathering with real-life respect

Footage and screenshots of the in-game memorial quickly spread across platforms such as TikTok and Threads, showing dozens of Roblox players sitting on virtual prayer mats and facing a memorial banner dedicated to the late centenarian.

It can be seen that the participants treated the occasion with utmost sincerity, proving that digital youth communities can channel genuine empathy across virtual borders.

Reflecting on the unexpected yet moving sight, HilmiStone shared with WORLD OF BUZZ his immediate reaction to the digital tribute:

“My immediate reaction was sheer surprise followed by deep admiration. It is not every day you see traditional customs blending into a virtual gaming space, and seeing everyone come together so respectfully to pay their respects showed a lot of heart.”

Young Malaysians turn to Roblox to share grief and solidarity

The streamer said platforms like Roblox have increasingly evolved beyond mere gaming into active social environments where young Malaysians gather to process shared national moments, having previously hosted virtual solidarity spaces for other global causes.

By removing physical boundaries, he said these digital landscapes allow youths to express collective grief and solidarity instantly in ways that feel natural to them.

“I am actually in touch with the organiser, and this initiative really highlights how today’s generation uses the spaces they inhabit daily to collectively process moments together.
“Platforms like this remove physical boundaries, allowing young people to gather, express themselves, and share experiences instantly in a way that feels comfortable to them, rather than just being passive observers online,” he said.
