M’sian Couple Caught in Johor Hotel Khalwat Raid After “Abang Saudara” Cover Blows, Says It Was Just an Affectionate Nickname
by Didi · WORLD OF BUZZEnforcement officers from the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) caught a couple in khalwat (close proximity) at a hotel in Johor during a random inspection.
When they arrived outside the hotel room in Pontian at 1:50 AM, a man opened the door about three minutes after they knocked, and found a woman sitting on the double bed.
Malaysian woman claims the man is her “abang saudara“
When asked about their relationship, the 18-year-old woman told the officers that she was with her “abang saudara“, referring to the 19-year-old man as her older male cousin.
However, unsure whether they were actually related, the officers asked for the names of their family members to establish whether they were mahram (individuals who are prohibited from marrying each other under Islamic law).
“The woman said she was there with her ‘abang saudara‘. To clarify matters, the officers asked for the names of their fathers, mothers, grandparents, aunts and uncles,” a JAINJ spokesperson shared in a Facebook post.
The pair eventually admitted that they were not related and had no family ties. They also clarified that they were merely dating and were not married.
According to the spokesperson, the couple met through an online application, grew closer over time and eventually arranged to meet at the hotel.
“The man was 19 years old, single, lived in Pontian and worked in Johor Bahru. The woman, meanwhile, was 18 years old, listed as unmarried in the system and worked in Pontian.”
The couple claim that “abang saudara” was simply an affectionate nickname
The couple later explained that “abang saudara” was simply an affectionate nickname they used for each other, despite having no actual family ties.
They also claimed that they had only stopped by the hotel to seek shelter from the rain as they were travelling by motorcycle, and were planning to leave shortly.
“The rain had actually only been a light drizzle, which the officers felt was hardly a valid reason for the pair to seek shelter together on a hotel bed.
“The condition of the bed, bedsheets and blanket suggested that they had been used, while the pillows were scattered. One condom had been used, while another remained unused.”
When asked about their marriage plans, both said they intended to get married. However, having only known each other for four months, they admitted that they were not financially ready to tie the knot.
The couple were arrested for khalwat under Section 27 and are expected to face charges at the Syariah Court.
