Yang di-Pertuan Agong: Those Rejecting Rukun Negara Principles are Not Worthy of Being Called Malaysians
by Azri Azizan · WORLD OF BUZZHis Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, today declared that any individual who rejects the principles of the Rukun Negara is not worthy of being regarded as a Malaysian citizen.
His Majesty stated that the Rukun Negara, introduced on 31 August 1970, serves as a national pledge and commitment by all Malaysians to restore unity and strengthen social harmony among the country’s diverse communities.
A guiding framework for daily life
As reported by BERNAMA, in his royal address, His Majesty called upon all parties to uphold every principle of the national philosophy. Sultan Ibrahim asserted:
“Therefore, I urge all parties to uphold every principle of the Rukun Negara and to practise it as a guiding framework in daily life as Malaysians.
“Any Malaysian who refuses to adhere to the principles of the Rukun Negara, I advise, the person is not worthy of being called a Malaysian citizen.”
Unity as the foundation of strength
Sultan Ibrahim also stressed that every citizen must remain united, tolerant, and respectful of one another while strictly adhering to the principles of the Rukun Negara.
His Majesty added that national unity forms the absolute foundation of Malaysia’s strength, ensuring economic progress, racial harmony, and long-term stability.
Remembering the dark chapter of 13 May
In his speech, Sultan Ibrahim reminded all parties to reflect deeply on the country’s painful history, specifically referring to the 13 May 1969 racial riots.
He noted that the tragedy erupted when certain parties acted excessively, disrespected others, and failed to uphold mutual respect and the country’s sovereignty.
“That incident has destroyed the unity of the people and undermined the stability of the country. Do not let history repeat itself,” the King warned.
The King made these remarks during the investiture ceremony held in conjunction with His Majesty’s Official Birthday celebration at Istana Negara today (1 June).
The event was also attended by Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, alongside Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, and various Cabinet members and foreign dignitaries.
