The world record for the largest ever haka has been set in New Zealand.

Thousands of New Zealanders broke the Guinness World Record for the most people performing a haka together at the same time on Sunday in Auckland, taking the record back from France who have held it since 2014.

While the official number is still being tallied, Guinness World Records adjudicator Brian Sobel told those gathered they had broken the record.

"I can safely say that you have surpassed the record to beat and you are officially amazing," Sobel told the cheering crowd.

The haka is a Māori ceremonial war dance and is popularly performed by New Zealand rugby teams before the start of a match.
