Brazilians in Ireland prepare to vote in election

by · RTE.ie

Thousands of Brazilians living in Ireland will head to the polls tomorrow as Brazil holds the second round of its presidential election.

The run-off follows a closely-contested first round in which former president Jair Bolsonaro's son Flavio secured 47% of the vote, narrowly ahead of the current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva who received the support of 45.2% of the electorate.

Brazil's electoral system requires a candidate secure 50% of the votes to be elected president.

This is expected to be one of the closest presidential races in the country's recent history.

For many of the Brazilians living in Ireland, the election has become a major topic of conversation.

At Toca Tapioca House in Temple Bar, manager Bruna Mainart said politics has become a topic difficult to avoid in the lead-up to polling day.
