Brett Baty playing like ‘kind of player’ he can be in hot final stretch of Mets’ season

MIAMI — Brett Baty finished strong last season, leading to optimism within the Mets he had finally arrived as a player. 

But for much of this year the 26-year-old utility player appeared lost at the plate. And yet, before he could be completely written off, Baty is again surging late in the season, reminding team officials of his value.

He entered Wednesday with an .814 OPS and seven homers over his last 38 games, dating to July 10. Included was the 426-foot blast he hit Tuesday, on a night the Mets homered three times against Sandy Alcantara. 

“I have a standard and I didn’t play to that standard early,” Baty said before departing with left knee pain after running to first base on an RBI single in the second inning of the Mets’ 15-14 victory over the Marlins. “I know what kind of player I can be, no matter what position I am playing. I am just trying to be that player.”
