Dogged effort to save pups

Judge Judy and I met about 30 years ago. It was over mutual love for our four-legged family members. We are both dog owners and dog lovers. The following, in her words, is what she has just sent me:

“On Sept. 12, tens of thousands of outraged Americans will march across NY state to demand the end of unnecessary experimental testing and the cruel breeding of beagle dogs for the express purpose of being tortured.

“The march will conclude on the 26th of September at the gates of Marshall BioResources, the largest commercial breeding facility in the country.

“Marshall BioResources are fancy words, but the company’s business model is simple. It is a for-profit business that breeds and stores some 20,000 animals and sells them for between $1,000 to $2,000 apiece for experiments. By many estimates the company enriches the Marshall family in excess of $12 million annually.

One heroic tail

“Earlier this year, a group of heroes liberated over 2,000 beagles from unconscionable treatment at Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin, closed the facility, and the state permanently revoked the license of its lead veterinarian.

Walked all over

“If you’re like me, you may wonder why beagles are the dog of choice for lab testing for not only serious medical treatments but also makeup, lipstick, mouthwash, hair color, shampoo, sunscreen, perfumes and household cleaners. Here’s the answer: Beagles are ‘small, friendly, trusting and forgiving.’ Perfect for repeated torture. Look it up. Tens of thousands of puppies (using caged animals who are bred over and over again and then sold to be poked, gassed, force fed and subjected to unnecessary surgeries by what could possibly be unlicensed people.)

“Just think about it. In 2026, we can explore Mars, clone living creatures, recreate the voice and images of people, use robots to conduct complex surgeries yet we must use these wonderful creatures to see whether you’re sensitive to sunscreen?

“Ludicrous. AI and lab-grown cells can do the lion’s share of this research. So why not?

“Well, I’m just a dumb TV judge, but why are our lawmakers so slow to address this blight? Maybe their campaign coffers are in need or maybe they are busy finding some obscure cause in a third world country to champion.

“Whatever the reason, they are asleep at the switch.

“Aside from the tens of thousands of marching heroes, I say whichever candidate shows up to support these animals will be the next governor of NY. The one who stays home will be the next dog catcher.”

Big Apple’s polished

Kindly let’s shut our Gothamsized mouths. A report by Laura Ratliff lists NY as one of the world’s three most attractive tourism cities. Whether she’s toured the Bronx or hit Bed-Stuy, who knows. But a Yanolja Research survey lists Osaka No. 1, Kyoto No. 2 and Seoul No. 4. She then shoves Paris as No. 5. Cover your trash can, replace Citi Bikes with tricycles, lose the scaffolding, and we’re back to No. 1.

Relations between the US and Iran have become so tense that President Trump has put on full alert aircraft carriers, combat Marines, a fleet of bombers and reruns of Alan Alda plus the entire cast that’s leftover from “M­ASH.”
