The Issue: President Trump offering $5,000 to every American if Republicans hold control of Congress.

As November quickly approaches, Republicans are showing their desperation (“ ‘Let’s finish the job,’ ” Sept. 10).

At a President Trump-organized rally, billed as a midterm party convention, he offered a $5,000 bribe to every American if and only if the Republicans keep control of the Congress. Details of how it’ll be accomplished are as non-specific as most of his boasts.

This was an act of desperation by a man who has proven his willingness to do or say anything to avoid repercussions. Anyone willing to buy what Trump is selling will see pigs fly before that $5,000 lands in their mailbox.

This was a rabbit-out-of-the-hat moment that came in the form of a $5,000 dividend to 200 million-plus adults. The timing was impeccable and what better place to incentivize a crowd than at the first ever GOP midterm convention.

When the president announced the dividend, the cameras panned on the money-man, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who delivered an affirmatory nod. To psyche up the audience, Trump blurted out “just pretend I’m on the ballot.”

It remains to be seen whether he has the Midas touch to pull this off. If so, promises made, promises kept.

Trump promised each American a $5,000 dividend if the Republicans win the midterms. That works out to approximately $1 trillion.

When are Republicans going to admit he is insane? We heard them go on about “Sleepy Joe” and how “demented” he was. At least Biden still lives in a world of reality.

The Issue: Multiple shootings and stabbings at the West Indian Day Parade wounding 10 people.

I have never attended the West Indian Day Parade, but was dismayed by your headline (“Parade of mayhem,” Sept. 8).

I know you have to report the news, but I am sad these low-life thugs have taken the spotlight off the hard work, planning and dedication of the people who organize this parade.

How about a news report highlighting the designers who created those beautiful costumes, the individuals who constructed and decorated the floats and the vendors who supplied souvenirs and food along the way?

I can only imagine how deflated all these dedicated people must feel; that despite all their hard work, stupidity and mayhem cast a long shadow over them.

You could line the parade route with NYPD officers, yet if someone wants something to happen, it will. So Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch should motivate people to a cause greater than their ego.

She ought to take this opportunity to put the city on notice that if this violence continues, even one stabbing or shooting, a permit will not be granted for the parade in the future.

At the 2026 West Indian Day Parade, multiple people were stabbed and shot. If they allow this parade next year, they’ll need a light armored division to police it. What a shame.
