Rams make surprising Ty Simpson decisions for 49ers opener

The Rams’ first game-day roster included several unexpected omissions from their 2026 NFL Draft class.

First-round quarterback Ty Simpson, second-round tight end Max Klare and sixth-round receiver C.J. Daniels were inactive for the season opener against the 49ers in Melbourne, Australia, according to ESPN’s Sarah Barshop.

Simpson’s designation provided the biggest surprise. Los Angeles selected him No. 13 overall in one of the first round’s biggest draft twists, but Stetson Bennett will serve as Matthew Stafford’s backup. Simpson was designated the emergency quarterback.

The decision followed an encouraging preseason. Simpson completed 21 of 25 passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in his debut, then added 192 yards over the final two exhibition games. Sean McVay praised his command after the opening performance.

Klare’s absence also stood out because of the Rams’ commitment to heavy personnel. Los Angeles ran 331 plays from 13 personnel last season — more than twice as many as any other team — and kept five tight ends on its initial roster. The second-round pick nevertheless will wait for his debut.

Daniels impressed McVay with his maturity and engagement during training camp. The coach previously outlined a potential role for the rookie receiver, but Los Angeles left both Daniels and veteran Tutu Atwell inactive.

Offensive lineman Bill Murray completed the list.

The choices do not define the rookies’ seasons, but they reveal the pecking order entering Week 1. Despite their draft status and preseason flashes, the Rams favored experience for their historic opener.
